The Baltic Sea is not only a window to the world for oil and gas supplies to Poland, but also a place where massive wind farms are to be built to supply the Polish economy with gigawatts of green energy. The bottom of the Baltic Sea is also the location of HVDC cables carrying electricity from our trading partners as well as fibre optic cables, essential for the functioning of today’s world.
In recent years we have seen an increase in attacks on critical offshore infrastructure. Now, the question is: how to effectively protect it? We are also seeing very positive developments around the Baltic Sea, with Sweden and Finland joining the NATO in the last few months, strengthening the Alliance in our region. During the first edition of the ENERGY SECURITY conference, we will address the issue of securing the energy infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, both in terms of oil and LNG terminals, oil and gas pipelines, undersea fibre optic and power cables and substations, power evacuation from offshore wind farms and the nuclear power plant in Choczewo.
It is worth considering how to effectively protect critical infrastructure, how to prepare an appropriate legal framework for the new challenges we are currently facing, and how to boost cooperation between different agencies in the Baltic Sea countries. We will also look at the Danish experiences in securing critical infrastructure at sea, and discuss examples from Ukraine, heroically defending itself against Russian aggression for more than two years also in the area of energy infrastructure.
